Optimal Road Trips

The 2026 U.S. Landmarks road trip

The landmark travel writers name most often in each of the lower 48 states and Washington, D.C.: 49 stops, 13,801 miles and 274 hours of driving on the fastest possible loop.

Start at whichever stop is closest to home and follow the numbers around until you're back where you began. At 6 hours behind the wheel a day the driving takes about 6.5 weeks.

The longest drive is Ben & Jerry's Factory to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, 12 h 34 min. The shortest is the White House to Fort McHenry, 1 h 6 min. Glacier adds 8 hours of driving to the loop, more than any other stop. The White House adds 3 minutes.

The proof

There are far too many possible orders to try one by one. Instead, the solver works out the least driving time any route could possibly need, then searches until it finds a route that matches it. Once it does, no faster order can exist. An independent solver then does the whole job again and has to reach the same answer.

Drive times assume no traffic and don't count time spent at each stop. How it works.

GPX works in most navigation and hiking apps (OsmAnd, Organic Maps, Gaia). KML opens in Google Earth. Each stop in the files sits where a car can pull in.

Google Maps and Apple Maps only take so many stops per link, so the trip comes in parts of about 10 stops, each one starting where the last one ends.
